Nf X100crmov5 Steel Surface Treatment Process - China

NF X100CrMoV5 steel is a typical hot work die steel, possessing excellent high-temperature strength, wear resistance, thermal fatigue resistance, and toughness.

1 - Nitriding Treatment

This is the most common and effective surface treatment process for NF X100CrMoV5 steel.

Process Principle: In a nitrogen-containing medium (gas, liquid, or ions), at a temperature of 500-580℃, nitrogen atoms diffuse into the die surface, forming a high-hardness, high-wear-resistant nitride layer.

2 - PVD Coating

Physical vapor deposition coatings are increasingly widely used on hot work dies.

Process Principle: In a vacuum chamber, a layer of ultra-hard ceramic coating several micrometers thick is deposited on the die surface by arc evaporation or sputtering of a target.

The process temperature is typically below 450-500℃.

3 - Chromium Diffusion/TD Treatment

A process that can obtain an extremely thick, extremely hard, and wear-resistant layer.

Process Principle: In high-temperature (approximately 900-1050℃) molten salt, a layer of vanadium carbide (VC) or chromium carbide (Cr7C3) ranging from a few micrometers to tens of micrometers is formed on the steel surface through diffusion.

For NF X100CrMoV5 steel, ion nitriding is the most widely used basic process.

For the highest performance, a combined treatment scheme of "ion nitriding + PVD (AlCrN coating)" is recommended.

The final process selection depends on the specific operating conditions of the mold, the failure mode, the production volume, and the cost budget.

Before performing any surface treatment, ensure that the mold has been properly heat-treated and thoroughly cleaned and polished.
