H13 Alloy Tool Steel Role Within The Tooling Material Range - China

Tool steels are grouped by service condition, and H13 belongs to the hot-work branch of alloy tool steels.

It is chosen where the tool sees high temperature together with pressure, such as aluminum and magnesium die casting, hot forging and extrusion.

Knowing where H13 sits in the family helps buyers pick the right grade instead of over-specifying.

Compared with cold-work tool steels such as D2, which carry high carbon and chromium for room-temperature wear resistance, H13 trades some hardness for high-temperature toughness and resistance to heat checking.

Compared with high-speed steels such as M2, which are optimized for red hardness in cutting, H13 is tuned for cyclic thermal load rather than continuous cutting speed.

This positioning makes H13 the default choice when the failure mode is thermal fatigue, not abrasion.

As an alloy tool steel, H13 reaches its balance through moderate carbon with a high chromium-molybdenum-vanad ium content, delivering a practical mix of hardness, toughness and thermal stability that cold-work and high-speed grades cannot match in hot tooling.

We supply it as forged and pre-machined rounds, flats and blocks with mill certificate and optional ultrasonic testing, cut and heat-treated to standard hardness ranges or to customer specification.
