Chromium at about 5% is the backbone.

It gives deep hardenability, raises resistance to oxidation and decarburization, and supports the secondary hardening that keeps the steel strong after tempering.

Molybdenum stabilizes the structure at elevated temperature and slows down temper softening, so the die keeps its hardness through long hot runs.

Vanadium refines the grain and forms hard, fine carbides that resist wear and help the surface hold up under pressure.

The three elements work together rather than alone.

Chromium and molybdenum secure toughness and thermal stability, while vanadium locks the grain size and lifts wear resistance.

Carbon sets the base hardness, and silicon plus manganese aid deoxidation and strength.

The result is a steel that resists heat checking and collapse under repeated heating and cooling cycles.
