Typical hardness properties of D2 flat steel include an annealed hardness typically ≤255 HB (Britt hardness), which can reach 60~65 HRC (Rockwell hardness) after quenching and tempering.

Recent studies have shown that microalloying can significantly improve the impact toughness of D2 flat steel.

For example, adding the rare earth element yttrium (Y) can effectively refine carbides and change inclusion morphology.

When the addition amount is 150 ppm, compared with D2 flat steel without rare earth addition, its longitudinal impact energy can be increased by 46.9% and its transverse impact energy by 9.9%.

Rare earth modification mainly improves the toughness of the material by promoting carbide spheroidization, reducing carbide size, and changing the fracture mode (from transgranular fracture to intergranular fracture).
