JIS SKD61 mold steel (H13 / 1.2344) Pre-hardened Condition

> Note: The JIS G4404 standard specifies the annealed state as the standard delivery condition; the pre-hardened state is a commercial offering resulting from secondary heat treatment by the steel mill and is not a mandatory standard condition.

1 - Pre-hardened hardness range (industry standard)

- Mainstream pre-hardened JIS SKD61 mold steel: HRC 40–45 (quenched and tempered through the full cross-section; refers to matrix hardness, not a surface-hardened layer)

- Versions from some manufacturers: HRC 38–42 / HRC 42–48; tolerance is generally ±2 HRC

- Corresponding annealed raw material: ≤229 HB (approx.

⚠️ Important limitations:

> Pre-hardened JIS SKD61 mold steel cannot undergo through-hardening again; reheating to temperatures above 500–550°C will cause the matrix hardness to drop.

> Surface treatments such as nitriding, TD (Thermal Diffusion), or PVD can be applied without altering the pre-hardened matrix hardness.
