GB SM4Cr5MoSiV1 bar (National Standard 4Cr5MoSiV1 round bar; prefix "S" denotes steel/bar stock; equivalent to AISI H13 / JIS SKD61 / DIN 1.2344 X40CrMoV5-1) is an air-hardening Cr-Mo-V hot-work die steel.

Its key selling point is the balanced combination of strength, toughness, thermal fatigue resistance, and hardenability at medium-to-high temperatures.

Key Characteristics (Bar Stock Perspective)

- High-Temperature Performance: Suitable for long-term operation at ≤550°C and short-term operation at 600°C; tensile strength remains ≥850 MPa at 600°C, with red hardness far superior to carbon tool steels or low-alloy die steels.

• Thermal Fatigue Resistance: Withstands rapid thermal cycling (e.g., water-cooling in die casting) and exhibits strong resistance to heat checking and cracking; the preferred grade for aluminum and magnesium die-casting molds.

- Hardenability & Deformation: High hardenability; bars with diameters of 100–200 mm can be hardened uniformly via air cooling or gas quenching.

Minimal heat-treatment deformation makes it suitable for direct cutting into mold cores or mandrels.

• Strength-Toughness Balance: Quenched hardness of 50–55 HRC; typical hardness of 47–52 HRC after double tempering at 560–580°C; room-temperature impact toughness of 15–20 J/cm² (resistant to brittle fracture).

- Wear Resistance & Surface Treatment: Vanadium forms VC carbides, providing moderate matrix wear resistance.

Easy to machine in the annealed state; nitriding or carburizing can boost surface hardness to ≥60 HRC, enhancing resistance to molten aluminum erosion and improving mold release properties.

• Delivery Condition: Hot-rolled or forged round bars are typically supplied in the annealed state (hardness ≤229–235 HB); quenched-and-tempered bars and precision-turned bright bars are also available.
