• Machinability: The high hardness and wear resistance of ASTM D6 sheet plate result in poor machinability.

In the annealed state, its machinability is only 20–25% that of a 1% carbon tool steel.

Compared to D2 steel, ASTM D6 sheet and plate typically require machining speeds that are 20–40% slower, and they induce more severe tool wear.

Therefore, when machining D6 steel, it is recommended to utilize carbide or Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) cutting tools and to optimize cutting parameters.

• Weldability: ASTM D6 sheet plate are considered difficult-to-weld materials, as they are prone to cracking during the welding process.

If weld repair is required, strict preheating measures must be implemented (typically at 300–500°C), followed immediately by stress relief treatment or a full re-heat treatment (annealing/quenching).

Selecting specialized tool steel welding electrodes with a chemical composition similar to that of D6 steel is crucial for ensuring weld quality.
