AISI D6 Steel Round Bar is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold-work tool steel containing 2.0% C, 12.0% Cr, and 0.75% W.

Its forging process requires strict temperature control, as well as slow heating and slow cooling, to rigorously prevent cracking and the precipitation of coarse carbides.

The following outlines the complete standard forging procedure for these round bars: I.

Pre-Forging Preparation

1 - Raw Material Inspection

- Material Verification: AISI D6 Steel Round Bar, in the annealed state (**approx.

225 HB**), free from cracks, shrinkage cavities, and segregation.

- Specifications: Prepare stock according to requirements, allowing for a forging margin (diameter +10% to 15%).

2 - Heating Equipment

- Selection: Car-bottom furnace or chamber furnace, with a temperature control accuracy of ±5°C, equipped with uniform air circulation and atmosphere protection (to prevent oxidation and decarburization).

II.

Segmented Heating Process (Core Procedure)

1 - Low-Temperature Preheating (to prevent thermal shock).

2 - High-Temperature Heating (to reach forging temperature).

Forging Deformation Parameters

1 - Forging Temperature Range

- Start Forging: **980–1050°C**

- Finish Forging: **≥900°C** (Forging below 900°C is strictly prohibited, as it leads to easy cracking and carbide deterioration).

2 - Deformation Control (for Round Bars)

- Deformation Method: Primarily **drawing out** (elongation), combined with rounding passes to ensure concentricity.

- Single Pass Reduction: **≤15% of cross-section**; employ light, rapid blows to avoid repeated heavy impacts.

- Total Deformation: **≥30%** (required to break down the as-cast structure and refine carbides).

- Operation: Maintain a continuous process throughout; avoid stopping the forging operation midway, which would allow the material to cool down.
