Although mill scale can, to a certain extent, provide short-term protection—being more robust than red rust and capable of briefly preventing further oxidation—in most industrial applications—particular ly in the manufacturing of precision molds and tools—it is regarded as a "defect" that must be removed.

Regarding the "mill-scaled surface of ASTM D6 steel, " one point must be clarified: while mill scale constitutes the standard appearance of the material in its hot-rolled or unprocessed state, it must be completely removed for the final application of D6 steel (e.g., in mold manufacturing).

The recommended process route typically follows these steps:

Rough Machining: Procure ASTM D6 steel in its mill-scaled state and perform initial rough machining to remove the majority of the mill scale.

Heat Treatment: Conduct quenching and tempering to achieve the required hardness (e.g., 58–60 HRC).

Finish Machining: Employ precision machining techniques—such as grinding—to completely remove any minor oxidation scale that may have formed during heat treatment, thereby achieving the final dimensions and surface finish.

Surface Treatment (Optional): If required, apply final surface hardening treatments, such as PVD coating or nitriding.
