Astm 4130 Alloy Steel Annealing Normalizing Quenching Process - China

ASTM 4130 alloy steel is a medium carbon chromium-molybdenum alloy steel (corresponding to the domestic steel grade 30CrMo).

Due to its good hardenability, strength and toughness, it is widely used in the manufacture of high-strength parts (such as gears, shafts, bolts, etc.

).

Annealing process (Annealing)

Purpose: Eliminate residual stress, refine grains, reduce hardness, and improve machinability.

Process parameters:

- **Heating temperature**: 840℃~880℃ (above austenitizing temperature).

- **Hot holding time**: Determined according to the thickness of ASTM 4130 alloy steel (usually 1~2 hours/25mm thickness).

- **Cooling method**: Cool with the furnace to below 550℃, and then air cool to room temperature.

Normalizing process (Normalizing)

Purpose: Refine grains, uniform structure, eliminate network carbides, and improve the strength and hardness of ASTM 4130 alloy steel.

Process parameters:

- **Heating temperature**: 860℃~900℃ (higher than annealing temperature to ensure full austenitization).

- **Housing time**: same as annealing (1~2 hours/25mm thickness).

- **Cooling method**: air cooling (natural cooling in air, cooling speed is faster than annealing).

Quenching process (Quenching)

Purpose: to obtain martensitic structure, significantly improve the hardness and strength of ASTM 4130 alloy steel, and lay the foundation for subsequent tempering.

Process parameters:

- **Heating temperature**: 850℃~880℃ (austenitization temperature, to ensure full dissolution of carbon and alloy elements).

- **Housing time**: according to the thickness of the workpiece (usually 30~60 minutes, longer for thick parts).

- **Cooling medium**:

- **Water quenching**: fast cooling speed, suitable for small parts or simple shape parts, hardness can reach more than 50HRC, but the risk of cracking is high.

By properly selecting the heat treatment process, ASTM 4130 alloy steel can achieve a balance between high strength, wear resistance and toughness to meet the use requirements under different working conditions.
