1.8159 steel is a German standard alloy structural steel, corresponding to 40CrNiMo6 steel in the DIN standard.

It has high strength, high toughness and good hardenability, and is often used to manufacture parts that withstand high loads and impact loads.

The quenching and tempering process must be designed based on the material composition and performance requirements.

Quenching Process (Core Steps)

1 - Heating Temperature and Holding Time

Heating temperature: 830-860°C (critical parameter).

Holding time: Calculated based on the effective thickness of W-Nr.

1.8159 steel, typically 1.5-2.5 minutes/mm (e.g., a 50mm thick workpiece requires 1.5-2 hours of holding time) to ensure complete austenitization of the workpiece core.

2 - Cooling Method (Quenching Medium)

W-Nr.

1.8159 steel has good hardenability.

Oil cooling can avoid excessive internal stress or cracking caused by water cooling, making it particularly suitable for workpieces with a cross-sectional thickness of ≤100mm.

For parts with larger cross-sections (>100mm) or requiring a deeper hardened case, water-oil quenching (first water cooling to 300-400°C, then switching to oil cooling) can be used.

However, the water cooling time must be strictly controlled to prevent cracking.

Tempering Process (Determines Final Performance)

Depending on the part's application requirements (e.g., high strength, high toughness, or combined mechanical properties), different tempering temperatures are selected:

1 - Low-Tempering (for applications requiring high hardness and wear resistance)

2 - Medium-Tempering (for applications requiring high strength and moderate toughness)
