JIS SUP10 steel is a medium-carbon, low-alloy spring steel with excellent mechanical and processing properties and high hardenability.

The addition of vanadium refines the steel's grain size, reduces overheating sensitivity, and improves strength and toughness.

Cutting Precautions

- Cooling and Lubrication: During cutting, sufficient coolant should be used for cooling and lubrication to reduce cutting temperatures, minimize tool wear, and improve surface quality and efficiency.

Commonly used coolants include water-soluble and oil-based cutting fluids.

- Machining Distortion Control: Due to the high strength and toughness of JIS SUP10 steel, machining distortion is prone to occur during cutting.

Therefore, during machining, care should be taken to control cutting forces and cutting heat to avoid excessive deformation.

Processing After Heat Treatment

- Quenching and Tempering: The quenching temperature for JIS SUP10 steel is generally 840-870°C with oil cooling.

The tempering temperature is selected based on the desired hardness level, generally between 400-550°C.

The hardness after quenching can reach approximately HRC55, and the hardness after tempering can be adjusted according to specific requirements.

Work Hardening: JIS SUP10 steel has a high hardness after quenching and tempering, which can easily lead to work hardening during machining, further increasing cutting difficulty.

Therefore, the formation of a work-hardened layer should be minimized during machining.

This can be achieved by selecting appropriate cutting parameters and tool geometry.
