AISI H11 material is an American air-hardening hot-work die steel belonging to the chromium-molybdenum-vanad ium alloy family.
Manufactured using the electroslag remelting (ESR) process, it is primarily used for hot forging dies for aluminum and magnesium alloys as well as ferrous metals, and is also utilized in the production of aerospace structural components.
It is specifically designed for high-speed hammer forging dies; in Europe, it is commonly used for stationary and moving die inserts and for hot-work dies prone to heat checking (thermal fatigue cracking).
AISI H11 material features high hardenability, excellent resistance to thermal fatigue and erosion, and a uniform carbide distribution that balances hardness and toughness.
It exhibits stable hot and cold workability and maintains high hot strength and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
Its overall performance surpasses that of 5CrNiMo steel, with a typical operating hardness of 50–54 HRC and toughness superior to that of H13 steel.
Through standardized heat treatment processes—including spheroidizing annealing, preheating, oil quenching, and triple tempering—the material's hardness can be adjusted to the 42–50 HRC range to meet specific operational requirements.
