NF 40NCD3 steel (French standard, equivalent to AISI 4340 or 34CrNiMo6) is a high-strength, high-toughness nickel-chromium-molybdenu m alloy steel.

It is widely used in the oil and gas (O&G) field due to its excellent comprehensive properties.

Main applications in the oil and gas field

(1) Drilling tools and downhole equipment

Drill collar:

- Withstands high pressure, torsion and impact loads of the drill string.

The high fatigue strength and toughness of NF 40NCD3 steel can reduce the risk of downhole fracture.

- Needs to be tempered + surface hardened (such as nitriding) to enhance wear resistance.

(2) High-pressure pipelines and connectors

Flanges and joints:

- Used for submarine pipelines or high-pressure wellhead devices, the strength of NF 40NCD3 steel can reduce wall thickness (lightweight design) while maintaining sealing.

- Must meet API 6A/17D standards and pass NDT testing (such as ultrasonic testing).

- Valve bodies and shaft components need to work for a long time in a humid and salt spray environment.

NF 40NCD3 steel can be nickel-plated or coated with an anti-corrosion coating to improve corrosion resistance.
