SCr440H materials are a type of guaranteed hardenability structural steel (H-steel) specified in the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS), equivalent to 40CrH in the Chinese national standard GB/T 5216 - The core objectives of its melting process are to achieve precise chemical composition, extremely high purity (low gas and inclusion content), and a uniform microstructure to ensure a stable and reliable hardenability band (H-band).

Core Melting Process

1 - Primary Steelmaking

Main Equipment: SCr440H materials are typically produced in an electric arc furnace (EAF) or a converter (BOF).

Process: Raw materials such as scrap steel and pig iron are charged into the furnace and melted at high temperatures, undergoing oxidative decarburization, dephosphorization, and desulfurization.

This stage primarily involves initially adjusting the carbon content and temperature of the molten steel and removing most impurities.

Goal: To obtain molten steel with approximately acceptable composition and temperature.

2 - Secondary Refining - This is a critical step in ensuring high steel quality.

After primary refining, the molten steel is transferred to refining equipment for further processing, typically involving one or more combinations of the following:

LF (Ladle Furnace):

Function: Fine-tune composition and control temperature.

Under an inert atmosphere, the molten steel temperature is precisely controlled through arc heating, while alloying elements (such as Cr and Mn) are added to precisely adjust the chemical composition to the standard range of SCr440H.

Purpose: Achieving narrow composition control, a prerequisite for stable hardenability.

It also provides further desulfurization.

3 - Continuous Casting

The refined, purified molten steel is tempered with argon and then fed into the continuous casting machine.

Process: The molten steel flows from the tundish into a water-cooled copper mold.

After solidifying into a shell of a certain thickness, it is drawn out by a straightening machine for further secondary cooling.

After complete solidification, it is cut into billets of specified lengths (such as square or rectangular billets).

Quality Control Points:

Protective pouring: Long shrouds and argon gas seals are used to prevent secondary oxidation of the molten steel during the pouring process.
