Minimal Deformation Skd6 Steel Heat Treatment Process - China

Proper heat treatment is key to realizing the full potential of SKD6 steel; typical processes include: Spheroidizing annealing: Heating to 860–890°C, holding, and then furnace cooling.

The objective is to soften the steel and improve machinability, reducing the hardness to ≤229 HB.

Preheating: A two-stage preheating process—typically at 600–650°C and 830–850°C—is employed to minimize quenching stresses and distortion.

Quenching: Heating to 1000–1030°C, holding, and then cooling in oil or air.

While air cooling is an option, oil quenching ensures complete hardening of the core in large cross-sections.

Tempering: SKD6 steel must be tempered immediately after quenching.

Tempering is usually performed three times within the 530–560°C range, with a holding time of 2–2.5 hours for each cycle.

Multiple tempering cycles effectively relieve stress and achieve an optimal balance of strength and toughness through the secondary hardening effect.
