GOST X12 steel, distinguished by its high-carbon, high-chromium composition—further enhanced by additions of molybdenum and vanadium—achieves a quenched hardness of 55–61 HRC.

This makes it perfectly suited for demanding applications such as hardware stamping dies and precision cutting tools; consequently, it is recognized as a standard grade across all major industrialized nations worldwide.

Heat Treatment Process

Quenching: 1000–1050°C, followed by oil or air cooling.

Oil quenching is recommended for effective section thicknesses exceeding 10 mm.

Tempering: 150–200°C or 500–530°C (high-temperature tempering is selected when enhanced toughness is required).

Annealing: 800–850°C, followed by slow cooling, to reduce hardness to below 210 HB for improved machinability.
