ASTM 4140 grade steel is a medium carbon alloy steel, which is often used to manufacture mechanical parts due to its good strength, toughness, wear resistance and machinability.

Its high-quality forging process is as follows: Forging process

• Upsetting: Place the heated billet on the anvil and use a press to apply pressure to reduce its height and increase its cross-sectional area.

Upsetting can improve the internal structure of the billet and eliminate casting defects.

During operation, the ratio of billet height to diameter should be controlled between 2.5 - 3 to prevent upsetting.

• Drawing: Repeatedly forge the upset billet between the anvil or die to increase its length and reduce its cross-sectional area.

When drawing, appropriate feed and pressure should be used.

Generally, the feed is controlled at 0.5 - 0.8 times the billet height to ensure uniform internal structure of the forging and avoid defects such as folding and cracking.

• Forming forging: According to the shape of the forging, the billet is gradually approached to the shape of the forging by die forging, die forging and other methods.

Forgings with complex shapes can be forged in multiple passes, and properly cooled and cleaned after each pass to remove scale and defects.
