EN 42CrMo4 steel (42CrMo in GB standard) is a medium carbon chromium-molybdenum alloy structural steel with good strength, toughness and hardenability.

It is widely used in machinery manufacturing, automobile, aviation and other fields.

Its complete hardening is mainly achieved through reasonable heat treatment process, especially quenching and tempering.

Heat treatment process for complete hardening of EN 42CrMo4 steel 1 - Heating and quenching EN 42CrMo4 steel is usually preheated at 500-600℃ for 2-4 hours to eliminate internal stress and prevent deformation during quenching.

Then heat to 850-880℃ (some data indicate about 845℃), keep for a certain time (at least 2 hours) to ensure uniform structure.

Then cool quickly (quench), usually oil cooling or water cooling, to form a uniform martensitic structure and achieve hardening.

Through quenching, the hardness of EN 42CrMo4 steel can reach 50-55HRC, which is approximately equivalent to the hardness range of 280-340HB.

2 - Tempering To reduce the brittleness after quenching and improve toughness and comprehensive mechanical properties, EN 42CrMo4 steel is generally subjected to low-temperature tempering.

The tempering temperature is usually between 500-600℃, and the time is adjusted according to the workpiece size and requirements, generally 1-2 hours.

The hardness after tempering is generally maintained at about 50HRC, while obtaining good fatigue strength and impact toughness.
