GOST 9KH5VF tool steel is a medium-alloy cold work tool steel with medium hardenability.

Oil quenching achieves full-section hardening of 30–50 mm, while water quenching reaches 50–80 mm.

The hardened hardness stabilizes at 60–64 HRC.

Deep Hardening Capacity (Hardenability and Hardening Depth) 1 - Hardenability Grade - Medium hardenability cold work tool steel, comparable to AISI A2 and DIN X100CrMoV51 - - The critical diameter for achieving full-section hardening through oil quenching is approximately 30–50 mm; water quenching can extend this to 50–80 mm.

- Beyond this size, pearlite/bainite tends to form in the core, reducing the hardness to 50–55 HRC.

2 - Hardness Gradient Characteristics - Hardness decreases smoothly from the surface to the core, without abrupt drops; it maintains ≥58 HRC even at a depth of 30 mm.

- Hardened layer microstructure: The surface layer consists of high-carbon martensite + undissolved carbides; the core consists of martensite + a small amount of bainite (large cross-section).

GOST 9KH5VF tool steel, with its Cr–W–V alloy system, achieves moderate to high deep hardening capability: oil quenching of 30–50 mm and water quenching of 50–80 mm yields uniform high hardness (60–64 HRC).
