For EN 42CrMo4 heat treated steel (equivalent to AISI 4140/UNS G41400) that requires excellent wear resistance, it can be given a combination of high hardness, wear-resistant layer and good core toughness through optimized heat treatment process and surface treatment technology.

Material properties and wear resistance basis

Alloy design: Cr/Mo forms carbides (such as M₇C₃, M₆C) to improve wear resistance, and Mn improves hardenability.

Core indicators of wear resistance:

- Surface hardness ≥ 55 HRC (contact wear conditions)

- Microstructure: fine martensite + uniformly distributed eutectic carbides (volume fraction ≥ 5%) .

Key control points for wear resistance

- **Organization uniformity**:

- Before quenching, ensure that the austenite grain size is ≥ **ASTM Grade 8** (to prevent brittle cracking caused by coarse martensite).

- **Retained austenite**: controlled at 5%~10% (reduced to <5% by cryogenic treatment or multiple tempering).

- **Surface integrity**: avoid decarburization (heating in protective atmosphere, such as N₂+H₂ mixed gas), surface roughness Ra≤0.8μm.

Through the above process, EN 42CrMo4 heat treated steel can replace some high-alloy wear-resistant steels and is suitable for heavy load, impact and sliding wear combined conditions.

The heat treatment combination (such as "quenching and tempering + nitriding" or "direct quenching + low temperature tempering") needs to be selected according to the specific service conditions.
