DIN 1.2436 mold steel is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold-work tool steel.

Nitriding (specifically gas nitriding) is the predominant surface-hardening method employed for this material.

The core principle involves low-temperature (500–530°C) processing over an extended period to form a nitrided layer characterized by high hardness, excellent wear resistance, and superior anti-galling properties, while inducing minimal dimensional distortion.

**Nitriding Process (Gas Nitriding—Common Industrial Practice)** 1 - **Pre-treatment (Mandatory)**

- **Stress-Relief Tempering: ** Performed after finish machining and prior to nitriding the DIN 1.2436 mold steel: **650–700°C for 2–4 hours, followed by furnace cooling.

- **Cleaning and Degreasing: ** Thorough degreasing is essential to prevent surface black spots and ensure uniform nitriding.

2 - **Single-Stage / Isothermal Nitriding (Preferred for Precision Molds)**

- **Temperature: ** **510–530°C**

- **Medium: ** Ammonia gas (NH₃)

- **Ammonia Dissociation Rate: ** **20–35%**

- **Holding Time: ** **12–20 hours**

- **Furnace Pressure: ** **0.02–0.05 MPa** (Slight positive pressure)

- **Cooling: ** **Slow cooling within the furnace until the temperature drops below 200°C before removal.

** 3 - **Two-Stage Nitriding (Balances Efficiency and Layer Depth)**

1 - **First Stage (Nitriding)**

- 510–520°C for 6–8 hours

- Dissociation Rate: 15–25%

2 - **Second Stage (Diffusion)**

- 550–570°C for 4–6 hours

- Dissociation Rate: 35–50%
