Suitability of Different Annealing Types for D6 Bright Tool Steel

1 - Spheroidizing Annealing (Most Recommended)

For D6 bright tool steel—a high-carbon, high-alloy tool steel—spheroidizing annealing is the most suitable annealing method.

Spheroidizing annealing involves heating the steel to a temperature 20–30°C above the Ac1 point, holding it at that temperature, and then cooling it slowly to ensure that the carbides within the steel are uniformly distributed in a spherical form.

Advantages of Spheroidizing Annealing: Significantly reduces hardness and improves machinability.

Prepares the microstructure for subsequent quenching, thereby reducing the risk of quenching deformation and cracking.

Suitable for tool steels with a carbon content greater than 0.8%.

2 - Stress-Relief Annealing (Used After Machining)

If D6 bright tool steel undergoes heavy machining during processing, or if the workpiece features non-uniform cross-sections, stress-relief annealing may be performed prior to hardening.

The process parameters are as follows: heat to 650–700°C, hold at that temperature, and then cool slowly.

This step eliminates residual stresses generated during machining, thereby preventing deformation during subsequent heat treatment processes.
