During the quenching process, a deeper hardened layer can be obtained on a larger workpiece, thereby ensuring that both the surface and the core of the workpiece can obtain good mechanical properties.

For example, for some gear parts with complex shapes that require high surface hardness and a certain toughness in the core, it can meet the 20MnCr5 material properties requirements after appropriate heat treatment.

High strength and toughness: After heat treatments such as carburizing, quenching and tempering, a high-hardness carburized layer is formed on the surface of 20MnCr5 steel, which has high wear resistance and contact fatigue resistance, while the core maintains high strength and toughness, and can withstand large impact loads and alternating stresses.

This makes it widely used in the manufacture of mechanical parts that are subjected to complex stresses, such as gears and shaft parts in automotive transmissions.

Good cutting performance: In the annealing or normalizing state, 20MnCr5 steel has good cutting performance, good surface quality, relatively small tool wear, and can meet the requirements of part processing accuracy and surface roughness, which is conducive to improving production efficiency and reducing processing costs.

Good welding performance: Although the presence of alloy elements will have a certain impact on welding performance, by reasonably selecting welding process parameters and taking appropriate post-welding treatment measures, 20MnCr5 steel can still obtain good welding joint quality and can be used for the manufacture of some structural parts that need to be welded.
