Aisi H13 Mold Steel Esr Refining Process - China

ESR (Electroslag Remelting) uses AISI H13 mold steel consumable electrodes prepared by conventional electric arc melting (EAF+LF) as the base material.

In an ESR furnace, resistance heat is generated by current passing through the molten slag, continuously melting the electrode tip.

The molten steel passes through the high-temperature slag layer and enters a water-cooled crystallizer, solidifying layer by layer into ESR ingots.

1 - Consumable Electrode Preparation

First, the ESR undergoes primary refining in an electric arc furnace followed by refining in an LF furnace.

The standard chemical composition of H13 (C, Cr, Mo, V) is adjusted, harmful impurities such as sulfur and phosphorus are removed, and the mixture is cast into H13 ingots.

These ingots are then forged and rolled into consumable electrode rods, with surface defects controlled.

2 - ESR Stage (Core Refining Process)

Current is applied, heating the slag and melting the electrode tip.

As the steel droplets pass through the active slag, desulfurization and non-metallic inclusion adsorption and separation occur: oxides and sulfides are captured by the slag, significantly reducing the size and quantity of inclusions and purifying the steel.

3 - Directional Solidification

Water-cooled crystallizers force bottom-up directional solidification, suppressing macroscopic segregation and resulting in continuous, dense grains.

This significantly improves the anisotropy of toughness in the forged material, with transverse impact toughness far superior to that of ordinary atmospheric-melted AISI H13 mold steel.

4 - Electroslag Resin Ingot Subsequent Forging + Homogenization Annealing

The ESR steel ingot undergoes diffusion annealing to eliminate microsegregation, followed by multi-directional forging to break up coarse dendrites in the as-cast state.

After forging, spheroidizing annealing is performed to obtain a uniform spherical carbide structure, laying the foundation for subsequent machining, quenching, and tempering.
