ASTM H13 Steel (equivalent to AISI H13, X40CrMoV5-1 / SKD61) Cr-Mo-V hot work die steel, with its core advantages being balanced strength and toughness, stable high-temperature toughness, and resistance to hot cracking, is a benchmark material in the die casting/hot forging field.

✅ High Toughness Core Characteristics

1 - Excellent Impact Toughness Due to Matrix Microstructure: After proper heat treatment, it consists of tempered martensite + finely dispersed alloy carbides; vanadium refines the grains, inhibits the precipitation of coarse carbides, avoids stress concentration, and reduces the risk of chipping and brittle fracture.

At a conventional quenching and tempering temperature of 48–52 HRC, the V-notch Charpy impact energy is approximately 15–25 J; ESR electroslag remelting of high-purity ASTM H13 Steel can further enhance isotropic toughness.

2 - Strong High-Temperature Toughness Retention: Within the temperature range of room temperature to 500–600℃, impact toughness does not drop drastically.

Under alternating thermal loads and mechanical impacts, it is less prone to instantaneous brittle fracture, making it suitable for repeated thermal shock scenarios in aluminum alloy die casting and hot forging dies.

3 - Good Isotropic Toughness (ESR Grade Advantage): Ordinary electroslag remelting of ASTM H13 Steel significantly improves the directional toughness caused by forging flow lines, resulting in a smaller difference in transverse/longitudinal impact values.

Thick-section modules exhibit uniform internal toughness, reducing the likelihood of cracking at the edges and cavities of large-size molds.
