Processing Characteristics

The machinability of AISI H11 tool steel is approximately 75% that of "W" group steels.

Its forging temperature range is 1000 to 1200°C.

Stress relief involves heating at 650°C for two hours followed by slow cooling.

Nitriding can be performed at 500°C to 600°C to achieve a hard surface.

Regarding welding, Stellite 6 can be used for hardfacing; this process requires preheating and maintaining an interpass temperature of 310–370°C, with a minimum deposit thickness of 3 mm to achieve a hardness of 41–42 HRC.

Heat Treatment

The heat treatment process for AISI H11 tool steel includes spheroidizing annealing, preheating, quenching, and tempering.

Spheroidizing annealing typically involves holding at 860–890°C followed by furnace cooling and an isothermal hold at 730–750°C.

Preheating is conducted in two stages: at 600–650°C and 830–850°C.

Quenching involves holding at 1000–1030°C followed by oil cooling.

Tempering is usually performed at 530–560°C with air cooling and may be repeated multiple times.

There is a correlation between tempering temperature and hardness: approximately 52 HRC after tempering at 100–400°C, 54 HRC at 500°C, 53 HRC at 550°C, 48 HRC at 600°C, 37 HRC at 650°C, and 31 HRC at 700°C.
