W6Mo5Cr4V2 heat treatment practice decides whether your M2 type high speed steel tools reach the famous 63-65 HRC working hardness and long service life.

This grade, equivalent to AISI M2, DIN 1.3343 and JIS SKH51, responds very well to a correctly controlled treatment cycle.

1 - Soft Annealing for W6Mo5Cr4V2

- Heat slowly to 850-870 C, hold 2-4 hours depending on section size

- Cool in furnace at maximum 20-30 C per hour down to about 600 C, then air cool

- Delivered hardness: maximum 255 HB, perfect for machining 2 - Stress Relieving

- After heavy rough machining, heat to 600-650 C and hold about 2 hours

- Slow cooling reduces distortion risk during hardening 3 - Hardening W6Mo5Cr4V2

- First preheat: 650 C to equalize core and surface

- Second preheat: 850 C

- Austenitize at 1210-1230 C, soaking about 20-25 seconds per mm of thickness

- Quench in oil, hot salt bath at 500-550 C, or vacuum furnace with high pressure nitrogen

- As quenched hardness: about 63-65 HRC with some retained austenite 4 - Tempering

- Begin tempering when the part cools to about 50-70 C

- Triple tempering at 540-560 C, holding 1-2 hours per cycle

- Each cycle transforms retained austenite and precipitates secondary hardening carbides

- Final working hardness: 63-65 HRC
