Skh51 Heat Treatment Preheat Quench And Triple Temper For Peak Hardness - China

SKH51 (JIS) is a tungsten-molybdenum high-speed steel whose full performance is only reached after a carefully controlled heat treatment.

The cycle starts with a staged preheat to avoid thermal shock in the high-alloy bar, then a high-temperature austenitizing soak that dissolves the alloy carbides into the matrix.

Quenching is done by oil or salt-bath with a held pre-quench temperature so the part cools fast enough to lock in a hard martensite without cracking.

A first temper is applied promptly to relieve quench stress, and SKH51 is then given a triple temper: the repeated cycles trigger secondary hardening from fine vanadium-rich carbides and stabilise the structure at around 63-66 HRC.
