Correct W6mo5cr4v2 Quenching Process For M2 High Speed Steel Tools And Dies - China

W6Mo5Cr4V2 quenching is the critical heat treatment step that unlocks the full performance of this tungsten molybdenum high speed steel, equivalent to AISI M2, DIN 1.3343 and JIS SKH51 - A correct quenching cycle gives 63-65 HRC working hardness, while a wrong one causes brittleness or soft tools.

Correct W6Mo5Cr4V2 quenching procedure: 1 - Preheating before quenching

- First preheat at 650 C to equalize core and surface temperature

- Second preheat at 850 C to prepare for austenitizing

- Slow heating prevents thermal cracking in large or complex tools 2 - Austenitizing (quenching) temperature

- Standard range: 1210-1230 C

- Thin tools: 1200-1210 C to keep fine grain

- Heavy duty tools needing maximum red hardness: up to 1230 C

- Never exceed 1250 C, grain coarsening destroys toughness 3 - Soaking time

- About 20-25 seconds per millimeter of section thickness

- Uniform salt bath or vacuum furnace gives the most accurate control 4 - Quenching media after austenitizing

- Oil quenching: suitable for simple shapes and smaller sections

- Salt bath at 500-550 C then air cool: best for complex tools, minimizes distortion

- Vacuum furnace with 5-6 bar nitrogen: cleanest surface, lowest distortion, modern standard

- Air cooling: only for very thin sections 5 - Tempering immediately after W6Mo5Cr4V2 quenching

- Start when the tool cools to about 50-70 C, never leave overnight

- Triple temper at 540-560 C, 1-2 hours per cycle

- Each cycle transforms retained austenite and builds secondary hardness

- Final working hardness: 63-65 HRC

- Optional cryogenic treatment between cycles improves wear life and dimensional stability Common quenching defects and their causes:

- Soft spots: slow quenching or decarburized surface

- Cracking: too fast quenching of complex shapes, or tempering delayed too long

- Low hardness: insufficient austenitizing temperature or soaking time
