Correct Astm H13 Quenching Temperature And Cooling Method For Long Die Life - China

price: 72.00 Dollar US$

ASTM H13 quenching temperature is the most important heat treatment parameter for this classic hot work tool steel.

Getting it wrong leads to grain coarsening, low toughness and early die failure, so every heat treater and mould maker should understand the correct range.

Correct ASTM H13 quenching temperature:

- Standard austenitizing range: 1020-1050 C (1870-1920 F)

- Common workshop setting: 1030 C for dies up to 300 mm thickness

- For maximum hot hardness: up to 1060 C, but only with controlled grain size

- Never exceed 1080 C, as grain coarsening sharply reduces toughness Preheating before the ASTM H13 quenching temperature:

- First preheat: 650 C, hold to equalize the core and surface

- Second preheat: 850 C, hold before the final austenitizing step

- Soaking time at quenching temperature: about 20-30 minutes per inch of section Cooling methods after austenitizing:

- Vacuum furnace with 5-6 bar nitrogen: the best choice, clean and low distortion

- Oil quenching: suitable for simpler shapes up to about 150 mm

- Interrupted quenching in salt bath at about 550 C followed by air cooling, for complex dies

- Air cooling works for thin sections but gives slightly lower hardness Tempering after quenching:

- Start tempering when the part reaches 50-70 C, never let it stand overnight

- Double temper at 550-620 C depending on the target hardness

- 600 C gives about 48-50 HRC, ideal for aluminium die casting dies

- Triple tempering is recommended for large blocks and ESR quality As quenched hardness at the correct ASTM H13 quenching temperature reaches 55-58 HRC, and final working hardness after double tempering is typically 44-52 HRC.

The vanadium and molybdenum carbides formed at this temperature range give H13 its famous resistance to heat checking and thermal fatigue.

Songshun supplies H13 in annealed, pre-hardened and heat treated conditions with EN 10204 3.1 certificates, and our engineers give free advice on quenching and tempering cycles.
