Understanding H13 Hardness Heat Treatment Guide For Hot Work Tool Steel Users - China

H13 hardness is the key property that decides how long your die casting dies, forging tools and hot shear blades will last.

As the most popular hot work tool steel grade (equivalent to 1.2344, DIN X40CrMoV5-1 and JIS SKD61), H13 achieves its working hardness through a well controlled heat treatment cycle.

Typical H13 hardness values at different stages:

- Soft annealed condition: maximum 229 HB (about 20-23 HRC), ideal for machining

- After hardening (austenitized 1020-1050°C, oil/air/vacuum quench): 55-58 HRC as quenched

- After double tempering at 550°C: about 52-54 HRC

- After double tempering at 600°C: about 48-50 HRC

- After double tempering at 620°C: about 44-47 HRC

- Pre-hardened delivered condition: 30-34 HRC, ready to machine How to choose the right H13 hardness for your application:

- Aluminium die casting dies: 44-48 HRC gives the best balance of thermal fatigue resistance and toughness

- Hot forging dies: 42-46 HRC, higher toughness needed for impact loads

- Extrusion tooling: 46-50 HRC for wear resistance at high temperature

- Plastic moulds: 30-34 HRC pre-hardened, or up to 50 HRC for abrasive filled resins Important heat treatment tips:

- Always stress relieve at 600-650°C after rough machining to avoid distortion

- Double tempering is mandatory, some specifications even recommend triple tempering

- Hold at tempering temperature long enough (2 hours minimum per inch of section)
