ISC A20302 Plate is a nickel alloy steel plate for low-temperature pressure vessels specified in the US ASTM standard.

Its high tensile and yield strengths are primarily due to the synergistic effects of its composition and heat treatment process.

The Strengthening Effects of Chromium (Cr) and Molybdenum (Mo): A20302 contains a certain amount of Cr (approximately 2%) and Mo (approximately 1%).

As alloying elements, these two elements enhance the strength of the ferrite matrix through solid solution strengthening.

Differences in atomic radius cause lattice distortion, hindering dislocation motion and thus improving the material's resistance to plastic deformation.

The Role of Carbon (C): A moderate amount of carbon (typically ≤0.15%) can form small amounts of carbides (such as Cr₂₃C₆ and MoC) with Cr and Mo, further enhancing strength through dispersion strengthening while avoiding the increased brittleness caused by excessive carbon content.

According to ASTM standards, A20302 steel typically has a tensile strength of 515-690 MPa and a yield strength of 310 MPa or higher, significantly higher than ordinary mild steel (e.g., Q235, which has a yield strength of 235 MPa).

This high strength enables it to withstand harsh operating conditions such as high pressure and low temperatures, making it widely used in liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tanks and cryogenic pressure vessels.
