GOST 20Х steel is an alloy structural steel in the Russian (former Soviet Union) standard (GOST), corresponding to my country's grade 20Cr steel (GB/T 3077).

The main alloying element is chromium (Cr content is about 0.70%-1.00%), which is a low-alloy structural steel, not stainless steel.

The influence of alloy composition on corrosion resistance

The role of chromium: Chromium is the core element to improve corrosion resistance.

It can form a thin oxide film (Cr₂O₃) on the surface of steel, which can isolate air and water to a certain extent and delay corrosion.

However, the chromium content of GOST 20Х steel is only 0.7%-1.0%, which is much lower than stainless steel (usually Cr≥12%).

Therefore, this oxide film is thin and not dense, and its corrosion resistance is limited.

Carbon and other elements: GOST 20Х steel contains about 0.17%-0.24% carbon.

Carbon will reduce the effective utilization rate of chromium (it may form carbides and consume part of the chromium), further weakening the oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance.

Other elements (such as manganese and silicon) have little effect on corrosion resistance.
