In the pulp and paper industry, efficiency and sustainability are paramount.

One persistent challenge has been the effective repulping of paper grades that contain wet strength resins (WSR), such as polyamine epichlorohydrin (PAE).

These resins, while essential for products like paper towels, coffee filters, and food packaging to maintain strength when wet, create a tough barrier during the recycling process.

To efficiently recycle "broke" (paper waste from the mill) or post-consumer products, the water-resistant resin must be removed from the paper fibers.

Traditional methods often rely on chlorine-based chemicals.

While effective, these can negatively impact repulping operations, degrade the quality of the pulp fibers, and raise significant environmental concerns due to the generation of toxic organochlorines (AOX) in wastewater.
