Rubber dams are hydrostatic structures provided with a bladder of textile-reinforced rubber.

It is screwed to the dam structure which creates a tight inner space.

The dam may be water-filled or air-filled.

It creates a balance between the internal pressure of the dam and the water load on the bladder.

The inflatable rubber dam has numerous advantages over other types of water control gate, such as:

•Simple and inexpensive operating system

•Can be installed on almost any channel cross-section shape

•Relatively low capital cost

•Perfect sealing; no leakage

•Virtually maintenance free; no moving parts, no painting

•A long span up to 100m; multiple spans of several hundred meters

•Easily designed to accept loading in both directions

•Clean operation; no hydraulic oil required

•Can always be "opened" (deflated); no possibility of jamming How does it work?

It works in the following order

1 - The pumps and valves are controlled from a power house.

2 - The appliances required for water-filled systems are located in underground shafts and for air-filled systems in an over ground power house.

3 - By varying the filling volume and adjusting the height of the bladder, the retention and discharge sections are adjusted as per requirements.

4 - Using the respective control system, the retention set point is set and adhered to reliably.

5 - The duration of Inflating and/or deflating is also adjusted as per requirements.

6 - The filling medium is supplied to the rubber dam by pipes connected with the control system.

7 - As soon as the rising water level in the retention zone exceeds the retention set point, the bladder is gradually deflated until complete depletion, thus clearing the full dam opening.

8 - As the water level decreases the bladder is inflated.

In this way the upstream water level is kept constant at the specified retention set point.
