Vacuum degassing is a process of removing harmful gases such as hydrogen and nitrogen dissolved or entrained in liquid steel by treating liquid steel in a vacuum environment.

These gases can cause problems such as pores, brittleness, and reduced welding performance in steel, affecting mechanical properties and service life.

Excessive hydrogen can cause pores and hydrogen embrittlement in steel, reducing plasticity and toughness;

Excessive nitrogen can form nitrides, causing embrittlement of the welding heat-affected zone and affecting cold processing performance.

Vacuum degassing is usually carried out in a ladle, which promotes the escape of gas from the molten steel by reducing the pressure, and at the same time, stirring is used to evenly expose the molten steel to the vacuum environment to improve the degassing efficiency.

2 - Vacuum degassing production process of 40Cr materials

The production of 40Cr materials often adopts electric furnace smelting + refining outside the furnace + vacuum degassing process to ensure the purity and performance of the steel.

The specific process includes:

- Electric arc furnace smelting raw materials;

- LF furnace (refining outside the furnace) for refining and removing impurities;

- Vacuum degassing (VD) to remove gases such as hydrogen and nitrogen;

- Continuous casting or die casting into ingots;

- Rolling or forging into the required shape.
