CNS SCM440 material is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel in the Japanese JIS standard (corresponding to 42CrMo in the Chinese GB standard), which is widely used in high-strength mechanical parts.

It has excellent heat treatment performance and is suitable for obtaining a balance between high strength and toughness through quenching and tempering (quenching + high temperature tempering).

The following is a detailed introduction to its heat treatment performance: Heat treatment process and performance

(1) Annealing

- **Purpose**: Soften CNS SCM440 material and improve machinability.

- **Process**: Heat to 800~850℃ and slowly cool (furnace cooling).

- **Result**: Hardness ≤229 HB (Brinell hardness).

(2) Quenching

- **Temperature**: 850~880℃ (oil cooling or water cooling).

- **Critical diameter**: About 40~60mm when oil quenching (complete hardening).

- **Hardness**: After quenching, it can reach 50~55 HRC.

(3) Tempering

- **Quenching and tempering treatment** (quenching + high temperature tempering):

- Tempering temperature: 500~650℃ (adjusted according to strength requirements).

- Hardness range: 28~36 HRC (corresponding to tensile strength 900~1200 MPa).

- **Low temperature tempering** (150~200℃):

- For high hardness requirements (such as after gear surface hardening), hardness ≥50 HRC.

Compared with other materials

Compared with AISI 4140: SCM440 composition is almost the same as 4140, but JIS standard has stricter control on P and S.

Compared with SCM435: CNS SCM440 material has higher carbon content, higher strength but slightly lower toughness.

Through reasonable heat treatment, CNS SCM440 material can achieve the comprehensive performance of high strength, good toughness and wear resistance, and is a classic material in mechanical manufacturing.
