A2 steel is an air-hardening cold work die steel with high carbon and chromium content, possessing excellent wear resistance, deformation resistance, and hardenability.

Hot rolling is a key process in its forming and processing.

The core objective is to improve the internal structure of the steel and eliminate casting defects by controlling temperature and deformation, laying a good foundation for subsequent machining and heat treatment.

Hot Rolling Forming Process: Hot rolling of A2 steel must follow the principle of "high-temperature rapid rolling, controlled deformation, and multiple passes with uniform deformation" to avoid cracking caused by large deformation at low temperatures.

1 - Initial Rolling Temperature: Controlled at 1050–1100℃.

If the initial rolling temperature is too low, the plasticity of the steel decreases, the deformation resistance increases, and cracking of the rolled piece is likely to occur; if the temperature is too high, it will lead to coarse austenite grains, affecting the mechanical properties after subsequent heat treatment.

2 - Rolling Passes and Deformation Allocation: - Rough rolling stage: Large deformation is used, with the deformation per pass controlled at 15%–25%.

The purpose is to break up the coarse grains in the casting structure and refine the grains.

- Finishing Rolling Stage: As the workpiece temperature decreases, the deformation is gradually reduced, with each pass's deformation controlled at 8%–15% to ensure dimensional accuracy and surface quality.

3 - Final Rolling Temperature: A2 steel is strictly controlled at 850–900℃.

If the final rolling temperature is too high, grains are prone to growth during post-rolling cooling; if the final rolling temperature is too low, work hardening is likely to occur, increasing the workpiece's brittleness and leading to cracking during subsequent cooling.
