Soft Annealing Process For Iso X37crmov 5 1 Hot Work Die Steel - China

For ISO X37CrMoV 5-1, the goal is to achieve a spheroidized pearlitic microstructure and reduce hardness to ≤229 HB (780 MPa), thereby significantly improving machinability (turning, milling, drilling) and EDM performance.

This process is suitable for forged blanks, pre-machining softening, and softening for rework after quenching.

ISO X37CrMoV 5-1 Standard Process (ISO 4957 / DIN specifications; applicable to vacuum or box furnaces)

1 - Heating Phase

- Heating rate: **≤80°C/h**; ensure uniform heating to prevent cracking caused by temperature gradients within the workpiece.

- Preheating stage: For large parts or thick sections, a holding period of 2 hours at 600°C may be added to minimize thermal stress.

2 - Annealing/Soaking Temperature (Standard industrial range)

**760 ~ 780°C (Optimal standard temperature: 770°C)**

Temperatures exceeding 790°C are not recommended, as excessive heat can lead to the formation of some austenite, causing hardness to rebound after cooling.

Temperatures below 750°C result in incomplete spheroidization, making machining difficult.

3 - Soaking Time (Based on effective workpiece thickness)

- Thickness ≤50 mm: Soak for 3–4 hours

- 50–150 mm: Soak for 4–6 hours

- >150 mm (large forgings): Soak for 6–8 hours

Key objective: Ensure uniform cross-sectional temperature and complete carbide spheroidization.

4 - Controlled Furnace Cooling (Determines final hardness)

1 - After soaking, **cool slowly within the furnace to 530–550°C** at a controlled rate.

Strictly control the cooling rate: **10–20°C/h** (rapid cooling prevents softening in this Cr-Mo alloy steel).

2 - Once the furnace temperature drops below 550°C: Stop controlled cooling and open the furnace door to allow air cooling to room temperature.
