JIS SNCM439 steel is a medium carbon nickel-chromium-molybdenu m alloy steel with high strength, good toughness and wear resistance, suitable for manufacturing oil drilling tools (such as drill pipe joints, drill collars, stabilizers, etc.

Key processes for manufacturing oil drilling tools with JIS SNCM439 steel

(1) Forging and hot working

Forging temperature: 1100-1200°C (initial forging) → 850°C (final forging, to avoid blue brittleness).

Slow cooling: pit cooling or furnace cooling is required after forging to prevent the generation of white spots (hydrogen embrittlement).

(2) Machining

Rough machining: before quenching and tempering, leaving a margin (heat treatment deformation is about 0.1-0.3%).

Fine machining: after quenching and tempering (hardness HRC 28-32), use carbide tools for cutting, recommended parameters:

Turning: speed 150-250 RPM, feed rate 0.2-0.4 mm/rev.

Drilling: low speed + high feed to avoid bit sticking.

Typical oil drilling tool applications 1 - Drill pipe joint - Requirements: high torsional strength and wear resistance.

- Process: fine machining after quenching and tempering + induction hardening of threaded parts (HRC 45-50).

2 - Drill Collar - Requirements: uniform hardness of large cross section and fatigue resistance.

- Process: forging → quenching and tempering → inner hole nitriding.

3 - Stabilizer - Requirements: high wear resistance and resistance to downhole impact.

- Process: surfacing tungsten carbide or chrome plating.
