Cr12W steel is a wear-resistant cold-work die steel.

It corresponds to various international grades, such as the Chinese GB standard Cr12W, the German DIN standard X210CrW12, and the Japanese JIS standard SKD2 - It is characterized by high hardenability, high hardening capacity, strength, toughness, and wear resistance, as well as minimal volumetric deformation after quenching.

Cr12W steel is a high-wear-resistance chromium steel—specifically, a high-carbon, high-chromium ledeburitic steel used for cold-work dies.

According to relevant standards, its density is approximately 7.6 g/cm³, and its typical operating (surface) temperature is generally below 200°C.

It is used to manufacture cold-work dies that feature large cross-sections and complex shapes, withstand high impact forces, and require superior wear resistance.

Depending on the operating conditions of the tools they produce, cold-work die steels must possess high hardness, strength, wear resistance, and sufficient toughness, alongside high hardenability, hardening capacity, and favorable processing characteristics.

Alloy tool steels used for this purpose generally fall into the category of high-carbon alloy steels with a carbon mass fraction exceeding 0.80%; chromium is a key alloying element in these steels, typically present at a mass fraction of no more than 5%.

Cold-work die steels have high carbon content, and their microstructures are predominantly hypereutectoid or ledeburitic.

Common types include high-carbon low-alloy steels, high-carbon high-chromium steels, chromium-molybdenum steels, and medium-carbon chromium-tungsten-vanadiu m steels.
