Excellent Din 51crv4 Steel Welding Technology - China

DIN 51CrV4 steel is a low-alloy chromium-vanadium spring steel known for its high strength, good toughness, and excellent fatigue strength.

However, the very properties that make it an excellent spring material (high carbon and alloying elements) also make it difficult to weld and prone to cracking.

Preparation Before Welding

1 - Selecting a Welding Method:

Preferred: Tungsten Inert Gas Welding - offers precise heat input control and a high weld purity.

Optional: Metal Inert Gas Welding - offers higher efficiency, but the heat input control is not as good as TIG.

2 - Groove Preparation:

Use mechanical processes (such as milling or planing) to prepare the groove, avoiding thermal cutting (such as flame cutting) that can cause edge hardening and microcracking.

3 - Thorough Cleaning:

Oil, rust, water, paint, and other impurities must be thoroughly removed from at least 20 mm on both sides of the groove.

A final degreasing of DIN 51CrV4 steel using acetone or alcohol is recommended.

This is key to preventing porosity and hydrogen-induced cracking.

Welding Technology:

DIN 51CrV4 steel is welded using multiple passes.

Each weld "tempers" the previous one, refining the grain size and improving the HAZ structure.

This ensures good fusion and avoids defects such as lack of fusion and undercutting, which can become crack sources.
