ASTM 5120 steel (also known as SAE/AISI 5120 steel) is a medium carbon alloy steel with high weldability, but some measures need to be taken during the welding process to ensure the quality of the weld.

Preheating before welding

ASTM 5120 steel has a high melting point (about 1360°C) and contains alloying elements such as chromium, manganese, and molybdenum, which increase the hardening tendency of the steel.

Preheating can reduce the temperature difference between the weld and the heat-affected zone during welding, reduce the cooling rate, and thus reduce welding stress and cracks.

Welding process

Welding current: A lower welding current should be used to avoid overheating and causing pores in the weld.

Welding method and filler material:

MIG welding: ER70S-6 filler metal is recommended, and the shielding gas is argon + carbon dioxide.

TIG welding: ER80S-Ni filler metal is recommended, and the shielding gas is argon.

Manual arc welding: E7018 electrode is recommended.

In summary, although ASTM 5120 steel has high weldability, appropriate preheating, control of welding parameters, and post-weld heat treatment are still required during the welding process to ensure welding quality and structural reliability.
