Bright machining (or finish machining) is not a single process, but rather refers to the precise control used to achieve the following standards on the surface of the H13 Hot-Work Die Steel:

- Surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.8 μm (finishing reference surface)

- Dimensional tolerance ±0.005 mm (critical mating surfaces)

- No machining-induced degradation layer (avoiding defects such as EDM white layer and grinding burns)

- Provides an ideal base for mirror polishing (Ra < 0.6 μm, reducing manual polishing time) H13 Hot-Work Die Steel Bright Machining Process Flow

2.1 Stage One: Roughing and Semi-Finishing in Annealed State

In the annealed state, H13 Hot-Work Die Steel has moderate machinability.

The goal of this stage is to efficiently remove excess material while reserving deformation compensation for subsequent heat treatment.

2.2 Stage Two: Hard Machining After Quenching

The hardness of H13 Hot-Work Die Steel increases significantly after quenching, making conventional tools inadequate.

The bright finishing process at this stage requires specialized hard machining techniques: (1) High-speed hard milling: High-speed hard milling is an efficient alternative to traditional EDM roughing, enabling semi-finishing to finishing directly on H13 with HRC 48–52 - (2) EDM finishing: For areas inaccessible to hard milling, such as deep cavities, narrow slots, and internal corner clearing, EDM remains an irreplaceable bright finishing method.

2.3 Stage Three: Precision Grinding and Lamination: For regular geometric features such as planes, outer circles, and inner holes, grinding is the preferred method for achieving high precision and low roughness.

2.4 Stage Four: Mirror Polishing: H13 Hot-Work Die Steel possesses excellent polishing performance, especially pure steel smelted through electroslag remelting (ESR), achieving an optical-grade mirror finish.

Polishing is not only an aesthetic requirement but also a functional one—mirror-finish cavities significantly reduce demolding resistance and minimize aluminum alloy sticking to the mold.
