ASTM 8620 steel is a widely used alloy steel in industrial applications, favored for its excellent mechanical properties and wear resistance.

To further enhance its surface hardness and wear resistance, it is typically subjected to carburizing treatment.

1 - Preparation Stage: First, the ASTM 8620 steel needs to be thoroughly cleaned to remove surface oil and oxides.

This step is crucial because any residual impurities will affect the carburizing effect.

2 - Heating Stage: Next, the steel is placed in a carburizing furnace and heated to a high temperature of 900-950 degrees Celsius.

Within this temperature range, the surface structure of the steel begins to change, preparing for the penetration of carbon atoms.

3 - Carburizing Stage: While heating, carbon-containing gases, such as methane or propane, are introduced into the furnace.

These gases decompose at high temperatures, releasing carbon atoms, which gradually penetrate the surface layer of the steel, forming a carbon-rich layer.

4 - Diffusion Stage: After a certain period, the carbon concentration on the steel surface reaches the desired level.

At this point, the temperature needs to be lowered to allow carbon atoms to diffuse further within the steel, forming a uniform hardened layer.

5 - Cooling Stage: Finally, the steel is slowly cooled to room temperature to avoid generating excessive internal stress, thereby ensuring the stability and durability of the carburized layer.

Through the above steps, the surface hardness and wear resistance of ASTM 8620 Steel are significantly improved, making it perform excellently in high-load parts such as gears and bearings.

Furthermore, carburizing treatment can also improve the fatigue strength and impact resistance of the steel, further extending its service life.
