AISI D6 Material Manufacturing Process **Forging**

AISI D6 material is heated slowly and uniformly to 700°C (1292°F), and then heated more rapidly to 900–1050°C (1652–1922°F).

**Annealing**

AISI D6 material is annealed at 800–840°C (1472–1544°F) and then cooled.

After annealing, the hardness of the steel is approximately 225 Brinell.

**Stress Relieving**

If heavy machining operations have been performed, stress in the AISI D6 material can be relieved prior to hardening by heating it to 650–700°C (1202–1292°F).

The steel is then allowed to cool slowly.

**Hardening**

AISI D6 material is slowly preheated to 750–800°C (1382–1472°F) and thoroughly soaked.

Heating is then continued to the final hardening temperature of 950–980°C (1742–1796°F), followed by air or oil quenching.

**Tempering**

AISI D6 material is heated uniformly and thoroughly at the selected tempering temperature.

A second tempering cycle may also be performed after cooling to room temperature.
