M2 high red hardness HSS earns its place on the specification sheet of every serious cutting tool program because of one property that ordinary alloy steels cannot offer: the cutting edge keeps working hardness even when friction heat pushes it close to 600°C.

1 - Secondary hardening.

During tempering at 540-580°C, fine M2C and MC carbides precipitate from martensite, raising hardness above the as-quenched level instead of lowering it.

Tungsten and molybdenum locked in the matrix resist carbide coarsening, so the tempered structure stays fine even after hours at working temperature.

3 - VANADIUM MC carbides.

Hard MC particles derived from 1.75-2.2 percent vanadium resist abrasion and keep micro-edges sharp during high speed cutting.

4 - Preserved martensite.
