They differ markedly in their formation process, surface characteristics, dimensional accuracy, and suitable applications.

1 - Black Oxide Surface

Forming Process: This surface state is mostly formed naturally after the ISO 20NiCrMo2 alloy pipe undergoes hot rolling or hot forging processes.

During high-temperature rolling or forging, the surface of the alloy pipe reacts with oxygen in the air to form a black oxide film, commonly known as "rolled skin, " requiring no additional surface finishing treatment.

For example, 20NiCrMo2 alloy pipes with Φ90-Φ1000 specifications often exhibit a black oxide surface state after hot forging.

2 - Smooth Round Surface

Forming Process: The smooth round surface is obtained by further refining the ISO 20NiCrMo2 alloy pipe after hot rolling/hot forging, including peeling, cold drawing, grinding, and polishing.

These processes remove the oxide scale and rough layer from the surface, ultimately forming a smooth and glossy surface.

Some alloy tubes with a smooth, round surface are also produced directly through cold rolling.
