Effect of two quenching heat treatments on structure and performance

(I) Changes in structure

After two quenchings, the original structure of 5120 alloy material (such as ferrite and pearlite) is transformed into a fine and uniform martensite structure.

The first quenching causes the austenitized structure to cool rapidly to form martensite, while the second quenching further refines the martensite grains and causes carbides to be more dispersed in the martensite matrix.

This refined structure significantly improves the strength and hardness of the steel, while improving the toughness, giving 5120 alloy material better comprehensive mechanical properties when subjected to load.

(II) Performance improvement

From the perspective of mechanical properties, two quenching heat treatments can greatly improve the tensile strength of 5120 alloy material, generally reaching more than 1000-1200 MPa, and the yield strength also increases accordingly, usually around 800-1000 MPa.

In terms of hardness, the Rockwell hardness (HRC) can reach 35-45, meeting the requirements of various mechanical parts for wear resistance and load-bearing capacity.

In terms of toughness, due to the refined grains and uniformly distributed carbides, the impact toughness of 5120 alloy material is improved, which can effectively resist the impact load and reduce the risk of brittle fracture of parts during use.
